Giant Ancestral Pectoral 10703

19th Century or earlier

3.5 in/9 cm  40.5 grams

This monumental gold object is both stunning and iconic. It is better understood in the context of tribal sculpture than as a piece of jewelry. Such heirlooms would be stored in the high rafters of a traditional house, the realm of the ancestors. They were only being taken down for special ceremonial occasions, as exposing the pectoral required a blood sacrifice be sprinkled upon it.
